Artists Statement

When the camera shutter clicks, less than one second of time is captured and recorded. The captured image may be colorful, dark, complex or strikingly simple. But to be compelling, the photo needs to tell us a story.

In his essay on "Understanding a Photograph" John Berger says, "The language in which photography deals is the language of events. All references are external to itself." My photographs seek to tell us more than what we see on the paper.

The photograph of the Saw Palmetto reflects the warm Florida sun low on the horizon late in the day. The photograph of a San Francisco artists studio taken on World AIDS Day, a "Day Without Art" tells of the artists who have died, victims of the AIDS epidemic and the struggle to understand by those who remain.

Whether walking the beach, hiking a mountain, or photographing a nude, I find myself engaged in a process of visual selection. Looking for that frame or image that tells a story about its context or its nature.

I have been photographing for over 20 years and currently use both digital and traditional film processes. All my photographic prints have been printed digitally using only archival fine art papers and inks.

Printmaking is a more recent medium for me.  All my block and dry point prints are based on my photographic images and provide another way of seeing the image that tells a story about its context or nature.
